FORCEFUL EVICTION OF STUDENTS FROM HOSTELS AVERTED
Thanks to the intervention of the
Student Union Government, the proposed sudden eviction of the students
from the hostels was stopped. Consequently, students were given till
Friday, August 21st to vacate school hostels with the exemption of
students from certain faculties and departments for comprehensible
reasons.
During an interview with the Vice
President of the Union, Comr. Nebo, Joy, we learned that
officials of
the Student Union Government have been meeting with the university
administration to extend the proposed deadline for vacating the
hostels.
To this effect, a memo signed by the
President of the Union, Comr. Orji, Peter E. and the Welfare Officer,
Comr. Chinonye Noble was circulated round the hostels which stated that
students are to be given till Friday, August 21st to put their things
together and vacate the hostels. Also, special considerations were
given for final year students who may not be done with their projects
by Friday. Other students for special considerations include students
of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy who are still in session,
Agricultural Science and Education students also due to their I.T programs which take place on campus.
According
to the Vice President, forceful eviction of stidents from the hostels
has not been in plans of the university administration, and there is no
plan to institute it. The major reason for this development is because
of the forthconing West African University Games for which students
need to evacuate the hostels to allow for accommodation for the
participants, and to effect some renovations before the time for the
games.
Students who felt relieved by the
intervention of the Student Union Government were seen around their
hostels commending the efforts of the government with statements like,
"Ehe! Na this one be SUG nah!", "Now they are talking"
On
the other hand, we were able to get some pictures of the stranded
students and their luggages outside the hostels before the intervention
of the Student Union Government. Below are the clips.
