EVERYDAY FOR THE THIEF…!!!

It was another unlucky day for a suspected thief who visited Franco Republic in the Nsukka Campus of the Den of LIons, specifically Alvan and Eni-Njoku Halls at about 3:00am on Friday, May 13, 2016. Students were aroused when we heard, "Stop there! Identify yourself!!..." and before long, a mob had gathered around a young boy and there was no waste of time before the punches rained on him. Containing the mob was not an easy task as we tried ascertaining the identity of the boy. Thestudent who stopped him said he came out his room to ease himself when he saw someone walk into the hostel through one of the streets around it. He carefully stalked him for a while as he went by some rooms around Alvan Hostel. He raised the alarm when the suspect tried to open a room in Eni-Njoku, haven got into the second hostel through the link between the two hostels. On his part, the suspect claimed he is a 200L Political Science student who stays off campus but came into the hostel to get materials from his class mate (Prince Chukwuemeka) in Room 221 (not sure whether Alvan or Eni-Njoku). Delegates were sent to Rooms 221 in both hostels and they returned with a report that there was no Prince Chukwuemeka or Political Science 2nd year student in either rooms. This made even his claim of being a student questionable. It was not long another citizen of the Republic reported that he had just lost his phone and the search revealed the suspect had the phone in his hands. The phone was quickly recovered and prompt report of it was also made to the security department as evidence.

The mob could not contain their anger as they threatened to also beat up the SUG officials who tried to calm them. It took the prompt response from the security department of the university to save from untimely death in the hands of the angry students who recounted their losses as a result of criminal activities going on in the hostels day and night.

The students did not hide their anger at the security men who came to take the suspect away as they feared he may just be released before daybreak. According to some of the students, they could no longer trust the security department of the university as the crime rate on campus has increased greatly and nothing seems to be done about it. According to one of the students, "We cannot trust any security man in this school anymore. Just check it, from the incessant attack on students around the university Stadium to the loss of property due to burglary when students had gone for lectures, so many things have been going wrong security-wise on campus and when we catch these criminals, security will just come, carry them away and release them after they had paid some money. Is that what they are meant to do? Are they doing business with the security of students?"

While we thank God for saving some citizens of Franco republic from another morning of tears, we sincerely appeal to the security department of the university and the university community at large to up its game in this area as the lives and property of over 30,000 armless battalion are at stake.
