BEFORE YOU COME FOR CLEARANCE (IV): ACCOMMODATION

Before I delve into today's discussion, I will like to make a
confession: "I AM RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS AS CONCERNS THE INFORMATION YOU
NEED". Hey! I am human, remember? I believe there may be topics you
want treated in this series which I have thus far not touched. Please
feel free to either comment, inbox or reach me through any of the
channels at the end of the post with your suggestions and I will post
on them as soon as possible.
Thank you.

So far in this series, I discussed:
- DOCUMENTATION, outlining certain documents you need to have handy
before coming to the university for your clearance. In case you missed
the post, please check it up here:

- ACCEPTANCE FEE PAYMENT which was necessitated by the inability of
new students to eitherog in to the portal or pay through e-Tranzact.
You may read it up here:

and

- SHOPPING where I highlighted some things you need to know to make an
informed decision as regards which course to shop into. Here it is in
case you missed it too:

With hope that your documents are ready or in the process of being
ready, and that you shopped right for the supplementary, I want to
welcome you to today's topic in the series: ACCOMMODATION.
Most times new student find it difficult to leave parents and loved
ones to journey into a new environment due to uncertainties like where
to lay their head as soon as they arrive their destination. This is
mostly the case with students coming from afar.
That seems like a bad news. But the good news is this: As far as UNN
is concerned, you need not worry about temporary accommodation when
coming for your clearance. This is because you have a number of
alternatives to choose from. These alternatives I will outline here in
this post, so I advise you read carefully and, very importantly, be
kind enough to share with as many as you think may need it.
Temporary accommodation has been made available for new students over
the years by different bodies within the university so they neither
get stranded nor fall into the wrong hands. From my experience, here
are some of the sources of temporary accommodation for new students
which have proven safe and reliable.
1. Student Affairs Department:
The Student Affairs Department does provide temporary accommodation
for new students pending the time they are done with clearance. It is
aimed at providing a place for the students till they get a permanent
hostel allocation for the session. Inasmuch as this is free, new
students who need it will have to apply for it by reporting to the
Student Affairs Department to request for it. Ofcourse you will need
to prove you are a new student, so I advise you have your documents
handy when going for this.
2. Fellowships:
There are many fellowships in the university, and one of the ways they
contribute to the welfare of new students is by providing them
temporary accommodation until they receive their own hostels. This
they do by linking the new students to trusted members or executives
of the fellowship who habour shelter while the clearance lasts.
N.B: None of them (as far as I know) uses membership as criteria for
accommodating students. Thus, feel free to contact any for help. I
have decided not to mention the names of any here because I cannot
exhaust the list and those whose names are not mentioned may
misunderstand me.
3. Friends:
Sure you have friends or contacts in the university who can help you
with temporary accommodation. The best thing to do if you have anyone
is to contact the person before you leave home so he/she may make
arrangements for you. Some of them may still redirect you to their
fellowships if they do not have the means to take you in. The
important thing is that you receive a little comfort while you run
around your clearance.

NOW ON PERMANENT ACCOMMODATION:
During your clearance, one of the decisions you have to make is where
to stay permanently for the session. Most times, new students stay on
campus (in the school hostels) for their first year so as to
understand the terrain before moving off campus, if they wish to.
However, whether you want to stay on or off-campus for your first
year, there are provisions for you. Here are the options you have:

1. UNN Hostels: There are about 18 hostels in the Nsukka campus of the
university for undergraduates, and as at last session,
-15 were for female students while 2 were for male. The last one is
not fit for allocation.
-There was an allocation of four students per room for the females and
five per room for the males.
-The females paid N11,000 per person while the males N9,000.
These are no projections as no one knows what the story will be like
this year but they may well serve as a guide in your decision-making.
2. Off-Campus Lodges: There are various locations around the
university where students can get accommodation. The distance between
these places and the university vary as well as the prices. Off
campus, you will find accommodations between N20,000 and N90,000 per
session exclusive of agent fees. These also vary in space, comfort,
amenities and ofcourse, distance from the university. Thus, it is
important you check carefully before deciding on which you want to
rent.
Another important thing you should note about off campus lodges are
the agents. Yes, there are agents who are willing to help you get a
good accommodation at the most affordable rates, and there are those
who are just out to get their own share of the money you are coming
with and leave you to your fate, whatever it may be, in the hands of
your landlords. It is thus important you tread with caution as regards
who you deal with.
