UNEC SUG STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

EXCLUSIVE!
The President of the SUG, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, His
Excellency, Comr. Chidi Ilogebe (HRH) has released a State of the
Union address to keep the student body and indeed the entire school
community about the workings and efforts of his administration so far.
Below is the full text of the address.

STATE OF THE UNION
Fellow comrades in the struggle,
I bring you greetings from a heart that is still very appreciative of
the support and mandate you gave to me as the servant that will be in
the frontline and fully get involved in the "Movement for the
Actualization of the Standard Welfare of Nigerian Students". Together
we are in this struggle and we thank God for having been with us thus
far.
We are still cognizant of the fact that our positions come with great
responsibilities to respond to the needs of every student and in
reaction to that, we have made both sweeping and specific efforts to
ensure that our welfare is giving a paramount place of priority at the
school's administrative level. I need not also to stress the fact that
we made promises and we are striving assiduously and sedulously to
fulfil them.
However, very integral to all our plans and actions is the need to
keep you all informed every step of the way and so we bring to your
doorsteps an account of our stewardship so far and the Union's
proposed projects.
First of all, we address the issue of LIGHT as we know it is a core
interest of the student community. Apologies must be rendered for the
skeletal light services that was witnessed some days ago. The Union
swung into immediately to know the reason for the problem and rectify
it. We discovered that the EEDC power outage was as a result of fault
that was not discovered on time while the generator's problem was as a
result of delay in the supply of diesel and also a mechanical fault
that the generator developed within that period. It was discovered
that owing to the fact that the EEDC light was not forthcoming and at
best, inconsistent, students rushed to iron and use hot plates at the
same time immediately the generator light came on and that caused
overload which caused the generator to trip off. We sincerely
apologize for all the inconvenience caused.
Our journey towards standard student welfare cannot be made without
our TRANSPORT system being efficient and affordable. So in reaction to
the increase in transport fare, we had series of meetings with both
the school administration and the Shuttle drivers and we succeeded in
bringing down the price of shuttle within the school to ₦20 and also
compelled the Tricycle (Keke) drivers at the school gate to revert to
₦50. The Union is still making efforts to attract a school/Union bus.
Water is one project that has given both the school administration and
the SUG sleepless nights. The SUG has been pressurizing the school
about the free water project and the Vice Chancellor has reacted
positively to the pressure and therefore doing reasonably all he can
to actualize this project. He has pumped in millions into the project
and also went ahead to set up a sub-committee on water with the
Union's president as a member. He runs an open administration and he
is committed to improving the welfare of the students.
The latest developments in the water project are as follows
A contract has been signed with the Enugu State Water Board to ensure
supply of water to the university community. Three water inlet have
been laid underground and they are
300mm AC water pump coming from New Market
150mm water pump from WTC area and
100mm pressure line from Independence Layout (IMT)
This particular project has hit the rock so many times because of the
following reasons
Lack of water in Enugu urban area as a result of a major damage to the
underground pipe at New Market. The Water Board is currently working
on the problem and we are hopeful for a fast and positive result.
ii.Old water pumps and filters that were last used a very long time
ago and are now more or less non-functional. These machines need
millions to be replaced.
iii.Topography of the school which makes it difficult for flowing
water to enter the school with great pressure that is enough to push
water into the school reservoir tank (tower).
iv. Probably, spiritual forces fighting against the actualization of
these projects.
Alternative sources of laying underground pipes to 9th Mile and Itukwu
Ozalla to help salvage the water situation in UNEC. The committee is
currently working on this phases.
Efforts by the school administration to add more water tankers to the
two already existing tankers for alternative supply of water to the
school community.
This ongoing project might take another 8 weeks before completion but
until then, let us keep our fingers crossed. Nevertheless, the plain
truth is that "water must be free in UNEC".
As regards our ICT and Lionet, a company called Tenecé has been
contracted by the Vice Chancellor to supply routers from the United
States of America to make the accessibility of the Lionet services
from the comfort of our rooms very easy. We await our contractors.
Also, we wish to announce that the HP Laptops (American Model) the VC
promised us are ready for purchase. Note that the laptops are branded
(has the school logo). To access the laptop, you can pay by
instalments at the cost of ₦84,000 or once at the cost of ₦70,000. It
is compulsory for incoming first year students.
Our social life has received some enhancement. Thus in a bid to keep
to our campaign promise of social integration, we have hosted or
co-hosted some events to liven up UNEC such as
The UNEC Football Freestyle at Adelabu Slab hosted by the D.O.G
The Matric Party Slam at Adelabu Slab hosted by the D.O.S
In collaboration with Union Bank, we attracted the renowned Nigerian
hip hop star, Phyno to UNEC which really skyrocketed the social status
of the school in Enugu metropolis.
We have other events lined up but we are biding time due to upcoming exams.
For our I.D Cards, Tenecé is extracting the data of all students from
the net with which they are currently working with for the production
of students' ID Cards as revealed by the Vice Chancellor. We believe
better days are ahead for the students in this regard.
The neatness of our environment is also of concern to this
administration. There is every need for our environment to be kept
clean always because "cleanliness is next to godliness". Owing to
this, the union has embarked on a Green Initiative Movement which will
see to the general sanitation of the school environment. This exercise
will hold on the first Friday of every month. All students are advised
to take note of the development.
The renovation of our hostels is the next big project on the Vice
Chancellor's scale of preference. Information has it that a contract
has been signed with Brunners Nig. Ltd, a construction company to this
effect.
Much emphasis must be laid on Lady Eudora Ibiam Hostel. The railing
construction process was halted because we found out that the size of
the newly constructed rails does not match the old/existing ones and
this is quite risky as the new rails appear to be heavier than the
decking itself; this might lead to wall collapse. Orders have been
placed for the reconstruction of those rails.
Security consciousness is every man's business. We must be alert at
all times. Report any suspicious movement you notice around you. Never
give any one the opportunity to be a thief; always guard your life and
property with care. Also, to the inhabitants of Kenneth Dike Hostel,
the new policy of locking the hostel gate is due to security concerns
but we are also aware of the inconvenience caused and we are working
on negotiating a compromise to satisfy all interested parties.
In all we do, we put God first and as such, the SUG has recognized the
church as one body it will never fail to partner with. There is need
for spiritual growth of Nigerian students. In conjunction with the
JCCB, we will soon begin the "UNEC Prays" morning breakfast that will
hold every first Saturday of each month.
In case you need to complain about any particular problem, you can
always come to the SUG Secretariat beside ICT Centre every Friday by
5-6pm or you can send your letters there or send a text to the
President on his mobile number – 07031641318.

  1. The appointment of the SPEAKER of the LAWSA HOUSE as the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity is against the independent of the Legislative Arm of Government. Is just like our President Goodluck Jonathan appointing the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly as his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity.

I wonder what we happen when we become the leaders of this country tomorrow. I weep for our generation. That's my humble observation. Thank you and God Bless!
