RUB AND SHINE IN UNEC

THE PROBLEM OF WATER IN UNEC HAS BECOME AN ISSUE

RIHANNA captured it best when she sang, “Shine bright like a diamond”. Whether she was referring to the newest adoption of the rub-and-shine technique by UNEC students, we do not know, but the prophetic value of that statement is undeniable.

Water was a problem in UNEC, but now, the water problem has become an issue as students watch the game of political chicken between the water vendors and the SUG reach its climax.

The origin of the problem is inseparable from the haste of the policy making which inadvertently has led to this dilemma. It would have been desirable that the SUG had gone to water vendors outside UNEC and made inquiries. After which, they would present to the UNEC water vendors, their findings. Based on this detailed statistics, the UNEC water vendors would have had no option but to accept the SUG price.

Now, the consequence of the hasty method used, is that the water vendors have discovered their strengths over the SUG and have thus invoked the withdrawal technique (equivalent to going on strike) which has for long, frustrated the students.

The only messiah in this issue would now be the school authorities who are the direct employers of the water vendors.

The SUG in its state of the union address informed the students that the recent scarcity of water is a price of revolution and yes, we might concede but we all must be wary that the students are bidding their time amid gritting of teeth.

The benefit of doubt is an entitlement of this SUG administration, considering the short length of time they have been in office and their enthusiasm for student’s welfare. It is worthy to appreciate their unending efforts towards solving the problem of water scarcity in UNEC country.

In the meantime, students might expect to  be writing their exams “shining bright like a diamond” if the water vendors are not compelled to provide their services to students on the authority of a specific performance or shall I say a “mandamus”.

WHATEVER the outcome and whatever one’s convictions on this issue, it begs the question: WHAT will the students do? WHAT is the saving grace? WHAT is our fate?
