THE 4TH WEST AFRICAN UNIVERSITY GAMES 2015: Day 1: Saturday, October 17th, 2015
The University Stadium glowed with beauty as a bride prepared
for her groom. Colourful decorations around the pitch and canopies to make up
for the unroofed parts. Armed mobile policemen and men of the NSCDC are on
ground to ensure maximun security. Represented countries like hoisted their
flags while about eight mobile toilets were made available among other
facilities.
Students of the Music Department of the university, looking
colourful in their kampala of black, green and white combination, enlivened the
atmosphere with

Prof. Kingsley Akpabio, Chairman of the West African
University Games first addressed the audience, expressing his delight that his alma
mater is hosting the games.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the hosting
university, Prof. Benjamin, Chukwuma Ozumba thanked all who participated in one
way or the other contributed to the success of the event of the day.
After a musical interlude by the Music Department, there was
a match past by the participating universities beginning with Delta State
University, University of Ibadan, Kwara State University, Kogi State
University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Federal University of
Technology, Owerri, Adekunle Ajasin University, Lagos State University, Benue
State University, Nasarawa State University, Odigun Agam University of
Technology, Yola, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Kano State
University of Science and Technology, Enugu State University of Science and
Technology,University of Calabar,Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,University
of Ibadan, University of Ilorin and the hosting university, University of
Nigeria, Nsukka. It was quite colourful, glamorous and entertaining.
The Vice Chancellor and other officials took group
photographs with the teams which were to play the first match. The kick-off was
next despite the delay of the match officials. At their arrival, the chief
host, Prof. Benjamin C. Ozumba marked the beginning of the games with the kick
of.
The opening match was between Team UNN and Team OAU. Both
teams struggled to give the first goal of the tournament until Obot Obong Etuk scored the only goal of the match against Team OAU. Thus the match ended with a win in favour of Team UNN. Such a good start for the
host team. We pray they keep the tempo high.
Tomorrow is another day which may mark the beginning of the
hockey competition as well. Whatever it brings, we promise to keep you posted
as the events unfold.
