NO COOKING IN THE HOSTELS: OUR RESOLUTION

Greetings to our highly esteemed Lions and Lionesses. Special greetings to all occupants of the 15 Hostels of the Nsukka Campus.

We received with shock and utter disappointment, the news of how some Hall Wardens seized stoves from students saying cooking in the hostels is illegal. At the instance we called together representatives of the varius arms of the government and in attendance were Hall Governors, Members of the House of Representatives, Senators and Executives who responded at a very short notice. Together we resolved as follows:

1.       That the rule against cooking in the hostels is obsolete, and was only in effective when the University Refectories were functional. Thus, it can no longer be effective in this time and era especially considering the recession and the struggle for daily meal by the students.

2.       That since the university is joining the trend of digitalization and modernity, it will be wise the university puts facilities in place to encourage, not just the use of stoves for cooking but also modern cooking equipments like electric stoves, hot plates and gas cookers.

3.       THAT WE, AT THE HELM OF AFFAIRS IN THE UNION, ARE ONLY WITHHOLDING OUR STUDENTS FROM TAKING ACTIONS AGAINST SOME OF THESE UNFAVOURABLE RULES WHICH ARE DETRIMENTAL TO OUR WELFARE AND EXISTENCE ON CAMPUS.

Consequently, we wrote to all Hall Supervisors, Hall Porters, Wardens and the Chief Security Department to cease from all forms of harassment of our students as regards coking in the hostels.

We also demanded:

1.       That henceforth, the Students' Union Government should be consulted before taking any form of decisions or actions that will affect our students. This will help us make the necessary contributions to such decisions to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

2.       That the seizure of cooking equipments by the Hall Supervisors, Porters and Security Personnel be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY pending our meeting and discussion with the Dean of Student Affairs tomorrow.

3.       That all cooking equipments seized from students BE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY without any delay or conditions.

4.       That the Students' Union Government will not be held responsible for whatever results from any action taken in defiance to these resolutions.

Thus, we appeal to all Lions and Lionesses to remain calm and law-abiding as we pursue this course diplomatically. Of a truth, diplomacy has not failed us in the current administration and we shall continue to tread the path of diplomacy. Also, we encourage any student whose cooking equipments have been seized to approach the Hall Warden or Porter who seized it and request for a release of same. This request should be done politely and with due respect. If such request is not granted, please do well to reach your Hall Governor, the Welfare Officer or the Information Officer as soon as possible for help on the matter.
