Some participants and contestants for the Face of UNN and other merit awards are, however, not happy with the turn of event. While some alleged serious manipulation of votes online for the different categories of the merit award, others are of the opinion that the process which produced the new Face of Nigeria Queen was not free and fair. According to these aggrieved parties, online votings should be monitored and censored to internet gurus from manipulating votes in favour of the highest bidder. Also, on that of the Face of UNN Queen, their claim is that the right person for the crown was robbed her price due to some inconsequential considerations and because the organizers wanted to calm nerves in certain quarters.
After the event, we had a chat with Dennis Okike who, according to records, won the Gulder Ultimate Search, 2013 edition after about three trials at the competition. According to him, it was a win-win situation while he was trying, and he advised Lions and Lionesses to stay true to their dreams. His was a story of rags to riches as he explained that during his days in the Den, he never had it funny. It was quite rough as he had days and sessions of homelessness, hunger and starvation. As the only son in a family of about five, the victory at GUS 2013 was an answer both to his prayers and those of his family. Asked what it felt like coming back to the Den, he said, "I must confess it is not a good one at all because it brings back old memories and reopens healed wounds. I had spills while in the university, like three years after my mates graduated I was still held back in the Den. But the good thing about it is that it has all turned out a testimony." He also confirmed that his days in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was more of a training ground for him, and that prepared him for his days in the jungle.
