The Door to Hell located in the Turkmenistan desert

Located in the Turkmenistan desert, this crater has been called the "Door to Hell".
This Desert Pit Has Been Burning In Fire For Nearly 50 Years. How did it all start? Well, in the 1970s a group of Soviet geologists were searching for oil, and as they drilled the land ended up collapsing underneath them. It released a ton of methane gas which began killing off wildlife, so the Soviets tried to burn out the gas by lighting a fire on it. Unfortunately the crater ended up having far more gas than they estimated and it has now been burning for nearly half a century!
